The range of habitats from rainforest to wetland, volcanic lakes and open woodland make it one of the world’s hotspots for birding with more than 300 species, including 13 endemic species not found outside the Queensland Wet Tropics. You’ll find an incredible array of wildlife just one hour west of Cairns. The higher altitude of the Atherton Tablelands is home to an amazing variety of birds, including Wet Tropics endemic species and subspecies.

Golden Bowerbird, Tooth-billed Bowerbird and Victoria’s Riflebird are just some of the stunning birds you may see. The abundance of bird life, diversity of habitats and ease of access makes this area a ‘must visit’ locale for bird enthusiasts.

Victoria’s Riflebird
Victoria's riflebird, also known as the lesser riflebird, Queen Victoria riflebird, Queen Victoria's riflebird, or Victoria riflebird, is a bird-of-paradise endemic to the Atherton Tableland region of northeastern Queensland, Australia where it resides year-round.
Golden Bower Bird
The golden bowerbird is a species of bird in the family Ptilonorhynchidae, the bowerbirds. It is endemic to Queensland in Australia, where it is limited to the Atherton region.
Tooth-billed Bowerbird
The Tooth-billed Bowerbird is one of 12 bird species endemic to the Wet Tropics region. The Tooth-billed Bowerbird is sedentary (does not travel far). It lives in the Atherton Region of Australia between 600 and 1400m altitude.
Garden Sunbird (Olive-Backed Sunbird)
Olive-backed Sunbirds usually occur in woodlands and at the margins of mangroves or rainforests, and they are also often recorded in parks and gardens. Their preferred habitats usually support a range of plants which have nectar-bearing flowers. Learn more.
Kookaburra
The Australian Kookaburra, known for its iconic laughter-like call, is a symbol of the Australian bush. Birdwatching the Australian Kookaburra at Walkamin Caravan Park offers a unique opportunity to witness this iconic bird in its natural habitat.
Rainbow Lorikeet
The 'Rainbow Lorikeet' is, as the name suggests, literally all the colours of the rainbow. It is found along the east coast and throughout the tropics of Australia where it can be very common and numerous. It is often heard whizzing by in flocks above the rainforest canopy.
